Morrissey did not approve of upcoming Moz box sets

morrisseyThere’s been a frenzy of reissues and over the last few years, a trend that has been welcomed by music fans and record collectors. Seminal recordings from influential artists are being resurrected and given a spit and polish through remastering and, in most cases, the addition of additional material like rarities and b-sides.

Just this year, EMI/HMV/Parlophone will be releasing two archival box sets of Morrissey’s 7″ singles. The sets will be titled 7″ Singles  88 – 91 and HMV/Parlophone Singles 91 – 95. The releases will surely be embraced by Morrissey fans. But if it was up to the Moz himself he wouldn’t want his fans to buy these releases. According to Morrissey himself, the two sets were released without his approal and he will not receive royalties for the sale of these products. More »

The Verve breaks up… again

the-verveThe Verve had a big chance to make it big almost ten years ago, but the band imploded because of infighting. After reforming in 2007 and releasing its critically well reviewed fourth album Forth, The Verve has broken up again.

This is actually the third time The Verve has disbanded in its 13-year existence. The Daily Mirror reported that guitarist Nick McCabe and Bassist Simon Jones considers The Verve as no more. They think that the reunion was only used by eccentric vocalist Richard Ashcroft to boost his solo career. More »

The Beatles and me

The_BeatlesThe Beatles.

If there’s one band that clearly defines and describes how much I love music, it has to be the Fab Four. Their music is indelibly imprinted on me not just as a music lover but as a person. My inevitable downward spiral towards music obsession mirrors how I slowly got into their music as well. I can still vividly remember my mom listening to their “teenybopper” phase songs every Sunday when she tunes in to this old radio show that played music from the Sixties. I yeah-yeah’ed to “She Loves You” decades before I fell in love with Karen O. More »

Radiohead’s Kid A, Amnesiac, Hail… to get “hefty” reissue

radiohead

Radiohead has already made its big anti-corporate statement by leaving a major label (Capitol) and releasing In Rainbows on its own. What Radiohead did is quite ballsy and admirable. By removing the major label muscle in its network, the band will have to do all of the nitty-gritty of music distribution on its own. If In Rainbows is any indication though, the band looks like it will succeed and besides, if there’s any artist that can actually do well as an independent it would be Thom Yorke and the boys. “If music be the food of the soul then you should eat right”

This is the raison d’etre of Red Tropic. We want this blog to become the source and resource of the serious music fan and collector. This blog is for the music geek who appreciates a wide range of music, whose only prejudice is quality and the importance of good music in art and the way we live.

We’ll give you fresh news, insightful reviews and even thought-provoking commentary on what’s happening in music. We’ll even throw in those crazy lists that everyone laps up. A music blog is nothing though without a healthy community of like-minded enthusiasts so feel free to speak your mind in the comments section. Contribute by recommending any significant artist or album you’ve heard lately — be it a new release or an oldie.

Let Red Tropic be the soundtrack to your soul.

Consider Red Tropic as the platter of goodness on which it is served. We want Red Tropic to be the source and resource of the serious music fan and collector- one who appreciates what each music genre has to offer without prejudice and has a wanton disregard for what is “cool” or “hip”.
