Leonard Cohen reschedules Europe shows

Leonard Cohen is one of the most important singer-songwriters ever to walk the face of the earth — and that’s not an exaggeration or an empty boast.

Cohen finally embarked on a much anticipated tour in 2008 and in 2009 embarked on a tour of the United States — his first in fifteen years. He was supposed to do a small tour of Europe this March but the 75 year old’s age has caught up to him. Cohen suffered a compression injury while exercising and it will take four to six months for him to fully recover from his injury. This obviously means he won’t be able to do his March tour.

But the trouper that he is, instead of cancelling his shows in Europe, Cohen decided to just reschedule his tour dates in Europe. This is awesome news for people who are dying to see Cohen perform — and there’s good reason to be excited. Cohen’s shows are universally regarded as the best live performances on earth and again that’s not an exaggeration.

The Flaming Lips to play The Dark Side of The Moon at Bonnaroo

Last December, The Flaming Lips released a covers album. And it’s not just any covers album where the band records their own interpretations of different songs. This time, The Flaming Lips actually covered a full album from another artist — namely, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of The Moon. The band covered it track by track, which is kinda cool. Though I’m not surprised. When it comes to The Flaming Lips, you should expect the unexpected — just look at their album Zaireeka.

Now, The Flaming Lips will take their Pink Floyd tribute a step further as they are booked to appear at the Bonnaroo festival and play the Dark Side of The Moon in its entirety. This is not the first time they have done this. During their New Year’s Eve show in Oklahoma, they also played the whole album track by track.

If you can make it to Manchester, Tennessee for the festival from June 10 to 13, then check The Flaming Lips out.

Magnetic Fields, White Stripes, release documentaries

If you’re a rock documentary freak like me then you’ll be eagerly anticipating watching two new documentaries revolving around two intriguing artists.

First off, a new documentary on The Magnetic Fields‘ Stephin Merritt is about to be released. Directed by Kerthy Fix and Gail O’Hara, the film (which is still untitled) was shot over a period of ten years and tried to chronicle not just Merritt’s career but also his personal life. Merritt’s notoriously aloof and evasive in his interviews so this documentary is hopefully going to be a great insight into Merritt.

The film will be screened in San Francisco. It is included in the San Francisco Film Society’s SF360 Film+Club screening series. The film will make its official premier this spring in a festival that hasn’t been named yet.

The release of the film is also timed with the release of the new Magnetic Fields record, Realism, which will be released on January 26.

Another hotly anticipated rock documentary is The White Stripes’ Under Great White Northern Lights. The documentary will officially premiere at SXSW in Austin, Texas, March 12 to 20.

The film will be based on The White Stripes’ 2007 tour of practically every nook and cranny of Canada. I’ve seen the trailer for this, and though it does look quite electric, claims that this is the most important rock documentary since Gimme Shelter should be taken with a grain of salt.

Gibbard, Deschanel wed; indiedom celebrates

Proving that geeks are now the new jocks, Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard just married the uber hot actress and singer Zooey Deschanel in Seattle last Saturday.

We wish them all the best… and do a collab already! Both an album and a baby.
